In the year 1848 sixteen-year-old Anne Custer becomes parentless and homeless. Not knowing what will become of her, she seeks shelter with neighbors. Then out of the blue an uncle she didn't know she had appears. He whisks her off to live with him and his family.

Anne, who grew up on a farm, is uncomfortable living the lavish lifestyle of her new family. She begs her uncle to send her to school so she can fulfill her dream of becoming a teacher. Anne's uncle is against education for women. He thinks anything a woman needs to know their husband or father will tell them.

This is a novel that will appeal to both adults and young adults who are interested in historical fiction and the history of women suffrage.

Barb E. Jensen is also the author of a young adult novel, A Horse Named Summertime. She lives in upstate New York with her two cats, Eckles and Jake.
