It's Christmas in New York City and there is a serial killer on the loose. Each victim has been raped and viciously beaten. The killer strikes only at night, somehow able to lure his victims off the streets and into isolated areas. His only contact is with a young police detective, Stephen Donovan, who along with his partner Bob Walters and an FBI profiler, Sarah Matthews, desperately attempt to stop the killer before he strikes again. Soon it is discovered that Stephen is much more involved in the case than originally thought, no longer simply an investigator, instead becoming a part of the action as it unfolds.
But what is the connection? Why Stephen? Could the killer be someone that he arrested years earlier - driven by revenge? Or is the killer Stephen's hometown friend who showed up just as the murders began? The killer is always one step ahead of them, as if he knows exactly what they are thinking. Could he even be a fellow police officer?
When an old girlfriend becomes the latest victim and a call from the killer is traced back to Stephen's apartment, only his new-found connection with a rookie police officer, Kristina Zurkowsky, manages to keep him from completely losing control.
