This is the story of a young girl growing up during World War II. Her experiences begin in Estonia occupied by the Soviet Union and their German liberation. We follow her along her flight from her homeland into Czechoslovakia, then further still after the Russian takeover of Eastern Europe. This is a story of coming to grips with the facts of life, as Mia is severed from her beloved homeland, her family, and her lovers.

Selma Kissa was born and educated in Estonia. When she was a teenager, Estonia was occupied by the Soviet Union, and then Germany. She was a student at the University of Tartu when the Soviet Union invaded her country again. Fleeing on the same day that the Red Army marched into her homeland, she experienced perilous journeys in search of freedom. After the war, she lived in the US Zone of West Germany, where she worked as an interpreter for UNRRA. In 1951 she emigrated to the United States.
