Allen juxtaposes the metaphysical and the mundane in her first novel, an exploration of human failings and superhuman gifts on the northern Oregon coast in the Forties. Addie Sawyer, a precocious child, startles her parents, Jake and Rose, when she innocently describes seeing her grandfather’s spirit at his funeral. Jake and his family are founding members of a strict Bible church in their small town, and, when Addie later reveals an electrifying healing touch, Jake fears that the source of her gifts is the devil. Rose vigorously disagrees, escalating the conflicts in the marriage and in the church. When Addie heals her brother from a life-threatening injury, events take a turn for the worse. The church elders take action to try to put a stop to Addie's healing abilities. Tragedy follows, and as Addie weaves her way through the reactions, attitudes and fragilities of those she loves the most, she must come to terms with the demands of such a gift, and make decisions about her own purpose and future.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

The question of how healing happens has been a fire in her bones for author Judith Allen since her early years growing up on the northern Oregon coast. In fifteen years as Director of the Reed Miracles Center and The Healing Place (an Attitudinal Healing Center) in Portland, Oregon, she has met and sponsored many healers, and learned a great deal about the nature and practice of healing.

Her 30-year career in educational research, writing, speaking and teaching includes a PhD in Psychology of Instruction, publication in many academic journals and magazines, a number of textbooks, and a non-fiction account of her own miraculous recovery in the 1980’s from metastasized cancer, The Five Stages of Death and Dying Getting Well. This is her first novel.

She lives in a small town on the Oregon coast with her husband, Jack, and continues to explore the dynamics of physical, emotional, and spiritual healing.
