A young woman stands at an intersection and slowly looks up. She knows that her entire future is right there in front of her. The college across the street was the portal to a new life filled with hopes she had carried with her since she was old enough to think about tomorrow.

Unfortunately, those hopes were beginning to fade. College offered her the world but she didn't know where she was headed. She needed to find her focus, to find her path through college and into life. She didn't realize that taking advantage of school didn't just mean passing every class with an A and getting on the dean's list every semester. She didn't realize that she had to look beyond the classroom, beyond the books, beyond the lectures.

The feature stories in this collection were written during my most productive time in college. Looking back on them, I realized they were perfect illustrations of how someone can make the most of their time in school, find their path, make a difference, learn what happiness can be and learn what it means to survive college and life with a smile.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR
I stumbled into journalism in 1995 when I inherited the campus newspaper of the community college I was attending. Until then, I never considered being a journalist or any kind of professional writer. I was still juggling all the options in front of me. Then, the writing bug bit down hard and in a couple of weeks I couldn't imagine doing anything else with my life.

My travels as a writer have taken me from the mountains of Alaska to the beaches of Virginia, covering any and every subject. I've penned stories about an 8-year-old motocross champion in Kodiak and the struggles of volunteers at a free medical clinic in Newport News. I've interviewed recipients of the Distinguished Flying Cross and die hard fans planning their pilgrimage to the next Star Wars premiere.

I have also completed lifestyle and business feature projects for 3Dfootball.com, The Flagship in Virginia Beach and The Virginia Gazette in Williamsburg. My experience also includes spot stories covering the NCAA basketball tournament.

I currently live in a small community in Tennessee called Cumberland Furnace. It's a wonderful area where my fiancé and I can rest and recoup between our trips on the road.
