Gifford, Missouri Army National Guard, is the author of several books and articles about American military history, including The Battle of Pilot Knob Staff Ride and Battlefield Tour, a teaching guide to the Pilot Knob, Missouri battlefield. He has a Bachelor of Science degree in Liberal Arts from the University of the State of New York As an army officer, he has commanded troops in Panama, Kosovo and, most recently, in Iraq, where he was awarded the Bronze Star Medal. He used his experiences in Panama as an Army officer in the early 1990s to create Darien, his first work of fiction. He has started work on the sequel, Panama Gold. In his spare time, Gifford leads tours of Civil War battlefields in Missouri, Arkansas and Tennessee. Major Gifford lives in Missouri with is wife, Justine, and their two boys, Jerry and Jeff.
