If theres ever been a time for a handbook on the basics of starting a small self-employment business, its now. American workers are increasingly finding themselves unemployed due to downsizing and plant closures. The current economic crisis will leave millions of people out of work with few good job prospects.

When I started writing this book in early 2008, my goal was to share my experience in building a small business with those who might want to make a change. Now, it may prove vital to people who have always worked for someone else but find they need to work for themselves due to job loss and a tough economy.

I believe millions of Americans should reject the cycle of being hired by corporations, only to be discarded at the first sign of an economic downturn. This country was founded by self-employed people. Small businesses are the backbone of America. I wrote this book to help those who want or need to build a small business but dont know how or where to start.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Nine years ago, the company I worked for in Meridian, Idaho offered me a choiceaccept a voluntary severance package now, or face the possibility of being laid off later with a much smaller severance. I left voluntarily. There I was 42, a high school graduate with 40 college credits, unemployed during a recession and asking myself what was next. After 14 years in the electronics industry, through no fault of my own I was forced to make a change. Sound familiar?

My cousin, Bobby, suggested I start my own window cleaning business. Ill admit that I was terrified at the thought of being self-employed. Bobby knew exactly what to do since he had done it successfully for years. With his coaching, I was able to build a window cleaning clientele and later a lawn mowing clientele as well.

I love being self-employed. My primary income is derived from lawn maintenance and window cleaning. I still call Meridian, Idaho home and since my work is seasonal, I have winters off. I decided to put that time to good use and write this book. I hope sharing my experience will encourage many to start their own small businesses.
