On Motherhood- The aim of feminism is to ensure equity for women. In doing so, feminism challenges the role and assumptions of motherhood that are detrimental to the freedom and happiness of women. Feminism therefore aims to free the role of motherhood from conditions of oppression.
Violence Against Women- In order to evaluate feminism's analysis of violence against women, I will discuss and examine the literature of feminism relating to the nature of violence against women and the contention that violence against women emanates from:
- The need for men to control women;
- The devaluation of women in society;
- The objectification of women as objects to please and serve men.
Then I will demonstrate that the contemporary causes of violence against women, as established by feminism, are the same causes of the violence against black slaves in American history. Thus, the position of feminism can be affirmed through demonstrating that women are social slaves in a patriarchal society where violence is used and condoned to maintain this social status quo.
Women in Policing- Gender bias exists in police forces in Australia and overseas. This bias exists primarily as a result of the inherent police cultural misperception that policing is fundamentally a male role.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR
My perspective is, I conclude, reasonably objective. After all, testimony to my objectivity is that I am an Australian police officer (in the state of Victoria for 10 years - joined in January 1990) and I am male - both qualities forming the traditional antithesis of a feminist.
My interest in feminism stems from my deep affection and regard for my wife and daughter, and an interest in their social freedoms and security.
