ABOUT THE AUTHORS
C. KUMARLAL FERNANDO, PhD, M.C.S.P., FAAPM, P.T., internationally known physical therapist and expert on pain, has been treating low back pain for 40 years and has written and lectured widely on physical therapy, pain, and low back pain. He is currently the Executive Director of the Forest Hill Institute for Back Pain, Inc., and was President and CEO of the Forest Hill Physical Therapy and Pain Clinic, P.C. in Oak Brook and Rockford, Illinois, and the Forest Hill Sports, Physical Therapy and Pain Clinic, Inc., in Downers Grove, Illinois. He is also President and CEO of Island Rehabilitation and Fitness Centers in Marco Island, Florida. A Fulbright Scholar and graduate of New York University, he was awarded the Founder’s Award at New York University for scholastic achievement. Dr. Fernando was Senior Physical Therapist at the Institute of Rehabilitation Medicine, New York University. He was an Assistant Professor at Downstate Medical Center State University of New York, Brooklyn, and then, Associate Clinical Professor at the University of Illinois in Chicago. Dr. Fernando was also the Director, in Chicago, of the Departments of Physical Therapy at Schwab Rehabilitation Center, at Mount Sinai Hospital Medical Center, at Johnston R. Bowman Center, and at the Presbyterian—St. Luke’s Medical Center Home Health Care Unit. His professional associations include: member of the Board of Directors of the Biofeedback Certification Institute of America, charter member of the American Pain Society, and member of the International Association for the Study of Pain. Dr. Fernando is also a Fellow of the American Academy of Pain Management and is on the Editorial Advisory Board for The Journal of Pain Management. RANA WEISS, medical editor and writer, graduated from Rosary College with a B.S., was a chemist before joining the Encyclopaedia Britannica as a staff writer on the 15th edition. She has also written articles for Compton’s Encyclopedia and presently freelances as an editor-writer in Chicago.
