Della's Children is a frightening character-portrait of the demented "Baby Jane" of child psychology, an educator who used her professional knowledge to swindle parents in an elaborate scheme of greed and profit, abused their children, and whose sanity unraveled in the process.

This incredible true-life psychological detective story is the document of the remarkable kids who untangled a web of fraud and deceit, revealed the origins of Della's frightful madness, and what they did about it.

Sometimes violent and grotesque, sometimes humorous and touching, it is a teenager's angry first-person narrative in a sarcastic personal style. It is a riveting tale of imprisonment, escape, and redemption, a chronicle of the real youngsters who prevailed over a skeptical adult world, exposed an elaborate scam, and whose shocking revelations led to the decline of the institutions they exposed.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Richard Kent Smith draws on intimate personal knowledge of the secret private school world. Having spent thirteen years in the schools depicted in this book, he escaped and worked his way through high school, college, and graduate school. His degrees are in Secondary Education, Fine Arts and Journalism. He has been both a teacher and counselor. He has worked with former students, parents, and educators to publicize the fraud, abuses, and violence in private schools, with an emphasis on the equitable testing and treatment of retarded children. He wrote his book in a clever, sarcastic adolescent style, with names and places thinly disguised, determined to shock and anger his audience. Designed to expose the need for the investigation of unregulated private schools, it was discreetly released in 1985. To that end it succeeded. It has remained unchanged, a riveting document of integrity, an incredible story.
