Stand by Me is a fiction drama spanning three family generations. The main character is Amrita who suffers abuse at the hands of her often drunk husband, Sunil.
When the couple tragically lose one of their twin sons in a car accident, Amrita withdraws emotionally from the world and totally ignores their newborn daughter, who arrives prematurely on the day of her son's funeral. The book explores Sunil's painful childhood, his alcoholism and how he helps to bring Amrita "back to life." The death of their son and their need for each other is what finally brings the couple together.
Stand by Me is a very poignant story set against a rich cultural background. The celebration of the birth of Lord Krishna, the ecstasy of Love, the pain of seeing one's marriage breaking, the agony of losing one's child have all been brought out so realistically that the reader cannot help thinking that it is all first hand experience. For a budding writer this is an excellent piece of work.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Rashree Maharaj is a first time writer. Stand by Me was written eight years ago and filed away until Rashree's husband discovered it and convinced her to publish it.
Rashree was born in Durban, South Africa, and currently resides in Johannesburg, South Africa. She is employed full time as a Global Marketing Manager at a leading auditing firm.
Rashree leads a busy but very content life, finding fulfillment in spending quality time with her husband and their three children. Her other interests include reading, writing, dancing and traveling.
As a child, Rashree was often reprimanded for spending most of her time with her nose buried in a book. It was not long before she took to climbing the tallest trees in her grandfather's orchard to hide from everybody and read to her heart's content.
Her love for books soon resulted in a yearning to write. Not surprisingly, essay writing was one of Rashree's favorite subjects at school. Her stories often led to requests from her teachers to read the stories to their essay writing classes.
