ISBN 978-1-60264-306-2, $9.95 (softcover). 148 pages. Claire Lambone is a spunky eleven year old who is infatuated with the idea of creating a sanctuary for homeless dogs in repayment for being rescued by one when she was just two years of age. She gains new knowledge and experience as she encounters different scenarios. Whether it’s her family’s discouragement, a feisty bull dubbed Volcano, a dog-hating chef, a bumbling but kind vet, or a strict lawyer, Clairie lets nothing stop her. Along the way, she rescues a sweet mutt named Thelma who would otherwise be destined to a dreary fate. A bubbly Chihuahua mix, a fiery kitten, a gentle Great Dane, a tiny poodle, and other animals give Clairie encouragement. The local vet’s sons, Charlie and Stanley Morrison, provide laughter and friendship. Aided by dreams and friends, old and new, Claire proves that a gracious smile, an open mind, and dogged-determination are enough to succeed in any adventure. ABOUT THE AUTHOR Elizabeth Layman is a fifteen year old living in Santa Barbara Country, California with her little sister and her parents. Although her sister is more interested in playing golf (yawn), the rest of her family has been very supportive. Born in Washington D.C. and later moving to Santa Barbara County, she has collected a varied assortment of experiences. For as long as she can remember, she has been writing stories and illustrating them. She began A Sweet Beginning at the age of ten and continued writing and editing it until she was fourteen years old. A dedicated animal lover, she draws much inspiration from her poodle, Cano, her cat, Figgero, and her two guinea pigs. Her vivid descriptions and sense of humor never fail to enchant her audience. She hopes to continue entertaining readers for years to come. She is in the process of writing a sequel to A Sweet Beginning and several other stories for teenagers. Login to review this product
